With a rich history that dates back to 1931, Niagara Block was founded by Frank Grimo, father of John and grandfather to current owners, Daniel and David Grimo. After immigrating from Italy in 1923, and eventually settling in Niagara Falls, Frank found work with Joe Bell, a local contractor, who owned a hand-operated block making business. In the winter of 1931, Frank bought the block machine from Joe and started making block in a garage at the corner of Ferry St. and Stanley Ave. Frank expanded the company by building a shop at a new location, and adding a tamping machine to mechanize the block making process. At this time, the business was producing around 125 blocks per day.
After several years of hard work, dedication, and numerous improvements to the business, Frank and his then partners (son John and son-in-law George), purchased three acres of land on Montrose Rd in 1968. A 5000 square foot manufacturing plant was built boosting production to 4000 units per day. In the early 1970’s, John purchased the company. Like his father, John was passionate about the block industry, and his vision was fueled by his belief that concrete block was the world’s most perfect building material. He took great pride in his company’s motto:
“The best block, The best service, The best price”,
“We ship Coast to Coast … the Coast of Lake Erie to the coast of Lake Ontario.”
Today, David and Daniel Grimo are continuing the legacy with a fully automated plant that can produce up to 8000 units per day. Our 15 acre facility allows us to maintain an extensive inventory of masonry products as well as landscaping supplies and much more! This family run business looks forward to being your one-stop source for your commercial and/or residential projects for many years to come!
